"The Flight" is one of M.A. Bulgakov's most striking works, which, like many of his other pieces, was not published during his lifetime. Debates surrounding the play escalated into political territory by the early thirties, with "responsible" officials deeming it an idealization of emigration and harmful to the Soviet audience. Through this play, Bulgakov bids farewell to old Russia, questioning what happened to the country, why Russians turned against each other, and whether return is possible for those exiled, willingly or not, into the vortex of tragic events. The film adaptation of Bulgakov's play "The Flight" became a significant achievement in Soviet cinema.
