A simple girl named Prekrasa falls in love with the young Prince Inger. To be with him, she seeks help from higher powers, making a pact with the mistress of the river ford, a bereginya. This gift dramatically alters her life, though the price seems distant. Together with Inger, Prekrasa journeys south to Kyiv, where he is to claim his uncle's inherited throne.
