Joel Chandler Harris, an American writer and folklorist, collected these animal tales after hearing them from enslaved African Americans during his youth on a plantation. These stories brought the author worldwide recognition. This collection includes eighteen of the approximately two hundred tales he wrote. They were first published in Russian in 1936, translated by Mikhail Gershenzon.
